Interesting story. I have a couple older versions picked up at yard sales. Also a few knock-off versions received as gifts or promotional stuff including one about 1/2 scale which is pretty handy. I keep one in my pocket anytime I'm out with the gas powered string trimmer; Very handy when the line breaks and gets trapped in the spool.

Do you own one. How do you use it. Gimmick or useful?

I have several from my day job days. I actually don't have much use for them....though I don't deny they can be handy. I find the weight to be a little more than i want to carry around, and most of the ones i have are the "Super Leatherman" models which are even more bulky/heavy. So I keep one in the truck and one in the tractor's utility box. I have another in the end table where i sit in the house. I think there's one in my shooting box. I saw one guy at work wearing his on his belt in he leather holster, upside down. It's easier to get it out of the holster that way...easier to loose it as well I would think. We gave each new employee one at their orientation when hired. One group i was talking to had this fellow who opened his up and promptly put a small cut in the end of his index finger. We got him a band aid but somehow the safety guy caught word of the happenstance. He dragged the new guy back to my desk and asked me to give him some "safety training" on using a Leatherman! Soem time later there were a rash of cuts across the plant with utility knives, Leathermans, and other sharp things. The response was a proposal to eliminate all cutting tools from tool boxes. When someone mentioned the Leatherman tools are in the boxes and are generally a real value for the tehcs to have, our safety guy actually called them (Leatherman) asking if they caould make them with the knife blade :BangingHead:.

I have a couple that reside in the vehicles.  Don't get much use but they seem like a good tool to have in case of emergency.  Lots of options.

I got one years ago at recommendation of my brother-in-law.   I never found  it that useful.  Since then I got the very small version and recently added it to  my key ring.  I use the knife blade some and the scissors some --  mostly to trim broken fingernails.

Can't edit my post, but i meant to type "safety guy actually called them (Leatherman) asking if they could make them without the knife blade :BangingHead:. I try and support safety measures, but sometimes folks get carried away with their concept of safety. Apologies for my brain going dead while I typed.....getting more and more common anymore.

I got mine out to have a look

  • needle nose pliers
  • knife blade
  • file
  • #1 phillips driver
  • three slotted screw drivers of different sizes
  • can opener

I used to carry one when I worked maintenance for the Postal Service but gave it up for just a Clip Knife.

I don't take it when I paddle in the backcountry due to its lack of use.

Reminded me I too have one stashed in the glovebox of the truck and Buick ICE. Guess I've never encountered that type of emergency. Forgotten about those.

Can't see the video, guess it's not meant for us Canucks. :WonderScratch: I have a standard one and a miniature in the pickup (Both knockoffs--- I'm not that rich!) but the only use I got out of them was when I had to pull one of those teeny-tiny fuses. The small needle-nose was ideal for that task! Another miniature resides in the "watch pocket" of my jeans, and sees regular use. It's ideal for pulling the inserter needle from the device that installs the CGM on my arm, so the entire device can be recycled. And speaking of diabetics, one should NEVER use that flip-out knife blade while having a reaction. Let's just say I'm no big fan of hospital emergency rooms! :WhoMe:

I have one that is probably in my network closet but I don't recall the model.  Seems like I got it about 35 years ago, give or take a few years each way.

Have wanted one at times but still no go. Have a nice Case XXX in my pocket most of the time and tools in truck and car.

A nice, flattish little stainless steel Gerber with a box cutter blade resides in my pocket. And  sometimes it goes through the washer. The Buck that was my dad's just stays in a drawer. It never gets used.  I don't like to carry bulky things.
