Popular Post Ron Altier Posted May 9, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted May 9, 2024 I browse thrift stores for wood to turn. Most people have no idea about wood or type. I have picked up pieces of Walnut, Purple Heart, Yellow Heart, etc. I saw a large clock made of Cypress. The clock was junk, but the wood looked interesting. I paid a few bucks for it and turned it into another Christmas ornament. The wood was challenging, it was soft, hard and sometimes brittle. This my first try and I must say this wood is beautiful when all goes right. Fred W. Hargis Jr, Headhunter, HARO50 and 7 others 4 2 4 Quote

Gerald Posted May 10, 2024 Report Posted May 10, 2024 Very nice. Cypress is sometimes a bit fuzzy too however I have seen some good pieces from it. Grandpadave52, Cal and lew 3 Quote

Cal Posted May 10, 2024 Report Posted May 10, 2024 Great repurpose of the clock Ron. How (and when) did you, on this piece, determine that it was cypress? That's a great skill set to ID what others consider to be scrap and be able to turn a great project from it. lew and Grandpadave52 2 Quote

I remember those huge trees with moss hanging down and “Stuckies” souvenir shops. Amoung the many local items were many wood items, many made of this wood. I asked my dad what it was and a local explained all about it. He may have been blowing smoke to a couple of “yankees” but we believed him. lew, Grandpadave52, Gerald and 1 other 3 1 Quote

Sadly, Ron - those original Stuckey's went out of business many years ago. A few years ago the founders granddaughter revived the candy side of the business. https://www.today.com/video/take-a-trip-down-memory-lane-at-stuckey-s-roadside-shop-146139205750?utm_source=Stuckey's+Corporation&utm_campaign=5041cfcafa-Hunkey+Dorey_COPY_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-d43421c96e-[LIST_EMAIL_ID]&mc_cid=5041cfcafa&mc_eid=2a6fc16ee5 Fred W.
