25 or 30 years ago, I used to go to a fourth of July auction, held by an Amishman who spent the rest of the year buying hand tools like planes, drills, cooper's tools, etc.   One year, they sold some Amish built apple crates for IIRC, $5.  I bought a couple and found them very handy.  So I ended up making a few of my own from 1x12 for the ends and leftover wood for the slats.  They have come in handy holding stuff around the house and car.

The other day, I saw IKEA sells a ready-to-assemble pine crate for about $20.  And you can hire TaskRabbit to assemble one for  $52.   Shocked!  There are 8 screws that you need to put in already drilled pilot holes,

Or you can just go to Menards and get one for just over $10, already assembled

Yep.  You can also go to any lumber yard/wood source and buy a single board "kit", that after you re-saw, crosscut, rip, drill, etc., will be a very nice crate.  You can also make it any size you want only limited by the volume of the wood board you started with.  ;)

I'm now intrigued with the potential of designing a crate kit:  All parts ready to assemble and no screws needed. A magic CNC cut  joint will allow snapping the slats into the corner posts, with the corner post snapping into the bottom plank.  Sold in a crate already snapped together you get parts for 4 more you can snap together.   Just a thought.  :)

Already been sketching ideas for the magic snap-in joint.  Of course I'm not a mass-producer, so If I do make a prototype you can probably buy it from my estate sale after I'm dead.  Such is what my house is slowly filling up with.

here's how the 8 screws go in, and if you need more help, there's Youtube videos. Even shows you which way to turn the screwdriver (not included?)
