Problem with wood joining (very small angle)

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

A newbie wood worker here. I am trying to make a number of large right-angel triangel frame from long timbers. The timber is a long 2 x 2 timber. As you can see from the diagram, the bottom angle is very small (only 9 degrees) and the top angel is very large (81 degrees) and I am not sure what is the best way to join them. I know how to do 45 degrees and so on. I would cross cut the edge at 45 degrees, but 9 degrees is far too small.

I am effectively just putting "C" on top of "B" and raising one end of it a little bit.

Can anyone please advise me on the best way to do this? Maybe a little hinge at the point where "B" & "C" meet?

Thank you kindly

Nigel

Hi Lew

Thank you very much for replying to me :)

2 x 2 are inches (around 5 x 5 cm). I thought of doing exactly what you have suggested, however, I thought cutting it at that angle would make it very very thin. If it was at 45 degrees or even 30 or so, there would still be a farely decent thickness. However, I did not think of using 2 screws. Perhaps, I will try it tomorrow and let you know.

Thank you for taking the time :)

Welcome aboard Calvinator, glad to have you here.  Hope you will pull up a seat and stay awhile, maybe share some pics with us...

Nigel, welcome to our community.

What is the purpose of this triangle? What are you building?

Hi Nigel. Welcome aboard ! That cut is best performed using a jig you can build and a skil saw. The jig involved can be very simple using a piece of plywood and some pieces of the same 2X2’s you will be using. What tools do you have at hand ?

Paul

Why not split the angle? The two pieces would be of equal strength. This is how I built 6 of our garden tutors.
