January 10, 20242 yr Popular Post Every January, we get a Check from my late parents Estate....one of 2 each year...I then go on a rust hunt down in Harmony, OH. area...2 Antique Malls in that area....LOTS of walking up and down the aisles/rooms, stalls.....feet were having cramp issues when I finally sat down to drive the Chevy..with it's NEW front tires....and I wasn't about to let little things like wind and rain stop me.. Was on the lookout for tools that either replaced bad tools in the shop, or was something the shop did not have....plus, the Bathroom door needed a replacement for it's "lockset" So..Tools first.. Top to bottom: Stanley No. 51 spokeshave ( needed a replacement bolt..fixed) Stanley No. 80...has 2 snapped off bolts....to replace the cracked Stanley No. 80's body...drill and tap new thumbscrew holes.. Irwin and Clark expansive bits...Irwin to replace the FAILED Clark bit...uses a gear to set the diameter.. Blue Wind ( is marked on the wood handle) 6" Bevel gauge.. Tap Wrench..a size I don't have Wood Marking Gauge..a bit too well worn? Might be time for a new arm? And...that lock set? There were PLENTY of Mortise versions of this .....I needed a surface mount...with a lock that worked...existing does not even latch...so..recycle the old screws and the Door knob assembly... Rust HUnt was just over $60...plus Lunch and the 2 new tires....LONG day...and didn't take the Boss along....will have to take her out tomorrow and see what she wants to buy...I'm plum tuckered out... One of the earlier tasks was to mortise a door lock and a gain hinge. That was a while back!

January 11, 20242 yr Popular Post I don't know how but I get plumb tuckered out everytime Steven Puts a post up. With my knee could not make it round the block much less up and down isles. MAYBE a good thing we don't have these rust markets down here I would have an even more overflowing shop. By the way here it gets rust holes in exposed metal.

January 12, 20242 yr Author Popular Post One item on the "To-Do List" is completed... That rusty No. 80 body, with the broken bolts..was to replace this broken and badly Brazed body.. By the time I would have gotten THIS sole flat..evening newspaper would have been thicker..so . Start with a few items from Lowes... 1/4" x 20 tap & drill bit to match,,,2 NEW 1/4" x 20 thumbscrews, and a bag of 1/4" washers. Backer plate was cleaned up...iron/cutter was sharpened and given a burr.. Drill out the broken bolts with the smaller bit...drill the new holes with the Tap's drill bit,,tap new holes. Easy Out.. Wasn't working all that well... Wire wheels to clean the "new" body back to bare cast iron...sole was sanded smooth and flat. body was given a coat of Rattle can Gloss Black.. Bolts to hold the Retainer Plate needed holes drilled, to allow a rod to either tighten or loosen them..bolts also got washers.. As the holes in the plate were HUGE. . Look any better now? Test drive on some "White Wood".....so.. There be 2 Stanley No. 80 Scraper Planes IN the shop...ready for work....while I was at it... Decided to test drive the Stanley No. 4-1/2, Type 11....to see IF it needs a sharpening... Stay tuned
January 12, 20242 yr Author Popular Post The 2 expansive bits.. Have been wire wheeled clean...both of rust and ClearCoat I hate Clear Coat on tools.. The smaller Clark bit is just loosen a bolt and slide the cutter...the Irwin No. 22.. Uses a geared drive..out to 3"..on that dial. Clark MIGHT get to 1" diameter hole.. As for the Bevel gauge? Logo on the handle says "BLUE WIND" ( unable to read the second line in the logo) Compared to a 6" Stanley SW version... Short and fat...Not even enough room for a "Handi-Grip" Levers are different, slots are different.. "Abbott & Costello"? Might come it handy?
January 12, 20242 yr Popular Post Excellent rescues Bandit. Nice restore on the #80. That Blue Wind bevel square is very unique.
January 19, 20242 yr Author Popular Post Finally able to read the second line on the Blue Wind Bevel Square.. T. H.S.M. CO. Maybe a Hardware supply Company? None of my Stanley made versions have 4 slotted screws to hold the brass plate where the locking lever is...AND, Stanley used 2 pins at the other end to keep the brass plates in place...instead of just one...hmmm...
