crap furniture

Featured Replies

Was at the furniture bank today catching up on repairs of a large donation.  A lot of today's repairs were loose pieces, often legs.    Now just don't expect any of this upholstered furniture to be passed down to your grandkids.    OSB as a structural frame?  Really?   Three pieces not repairable because the legs cannot be reattached.

AND probably not worth attaching a full new frame to existing frame?

The ol saying could not be any truer in all things, "Crap in, crap out". Some wise man said that. Actually I think it may have been a computer programmer back in the day.

Dad used to say, "can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."

Yep.  One of my consulting jobs has been for a local lawyer whenever there was a law suit about furniture that failed and usually injured someone.  In every case I could point out structural mistakes/bad material choices made by the manufacturer.

I would frequently say (to myself) during a repair, "Well, there's a piece of wood that should have gone into the scrap bin."

I believe the original saying back in my software days (at least the one I used), "Garbage in, garbage out."

I may be wrong (usually am, but I vaguely remember a story about Google, that actually started out as GIGO but it was already trademarked so they opted for Google.  Makes sense though as in every search engine I've tried if I put in a poorly thought out search terms I always get useless results.

Another piece today, a heavy motorized recliner.  A small block of 1/2" plywood pneumatically brad nailed into the corner to hold the front leg.  No glue, no additional blocking, nothing.  And wonder why it failed.  FWIW, the motor also burned out and was removed.  And a new method of attaching legs--a long hole into which a machine screw is inserted.  So you need an extra long phillips head screwdriver to tighten it, after you have removed the cushion foot (assuming you know the hidden secret.)

Another piece was a small end table with the blocks the leg screwed into came off.  Again, no glue and the screw was only about 1/4" into the top.  A hole drilled, then the screw inserted, then a threaded insert with no way to get it out.  But there were a few pneumatic brads holding the apron to the posts.

I think I'm glad I retired from the repair business, I'd hate to have to try to repair some of these under warranty.
