Failure is a chance to learn….(I hope)

Well…. Had a concept of doing a snack tray with epoxy to where on the bottom would have a design. Here is the Power T of Tennessee. Why? It’s is easy and my number 2 team. CNC’d the bottom to 0.31 in a .75 walnut board. Poured the epoxy yesterday. Tonight sanded and flattened.

put in a bowl and tray bit in the CNC. The idea was to hog out to the T and epoxy to where that would be the bottom of the bowl. I made the epoxy translucent enough to show light through it. BUT on the last pass the bit grabbed the epoxy and dug down.

lesson….idk know the epoxy was cured enough or because of the bit heat built up and made it soft. So going to just hog out a T and epoxy it to where is it supported by surround wood instead of ‘floating.’

oh well lol.

Good effort Kevin, like the title there is always something to learn.

Sorry for the outcome Kevin. Thanks for sharing the failure as well as the successes. Lessons learned may help others down the road.

Nah...Grew up in Florida....Go 'Noles!

Bummer!

Gonna guess part of the problem was the heat. I tried making a combo resin (Alumilite) and wood turning. When sanding, the resin kept getting soft. Ended up using "canned air" held upside down as a coolant. Spray, sand, repeat.

Yeah….kinda scratching my head between bit heat, 3/4 bowl and tray bit, or because of thickness wasn’t fully cured. I kinda kick myself for not letting it cure longer. That canned spray sounds interesting work around.

That is absolutely awesome….what -program did you use? To be honest I’m doing my best not to be pretentious and ask you for a copy of it. Lol you did a great job!

Can you get Aspire files?

Yes sir. I have Vectric desktop.

Yep.   Thanks for the Post KevTN.   The best thing about failures is that they are where you can learn the most from the experience.  Some of the nicest, most unique projects my students made started with a failure of some kind.
