Problem with a propane tank

Featured Replies

I keep an extra 20# LP bottle on hand for when the grill runs out and for use with my weedburner. I had the spare just filled in the last few months (I don't exchange, I refill) when it was MT.Sp today I hooked up the weedburner and turned on the gas and got nothing. Yep, the tank is full....but there' no gas to the weedburner. I disconnet and tap lightly on the LP tank valve with a hammer, then turn it on (nothing connected) and still got nothing. Did the valve just decide to get stuck closed after i had it filled? The obvious back up plan is to take it in and exchange it for another tank, but i bought this one new some years ago and would just like to keep it. Anybody have this happen?

Thank you Lew, I'll give that a shot tomorrow morning.

Well, I tried the venting technique and so far nothing. I vented much longer, probably as much as 5 minutes total and still not getting gas form the tank. I intend to vent some more thinking the OPD gizmo got stuck from the tank being filled more than maybe it should. Also, to rule out that it's the weedburner at fault, I'll connect it to the grill and see what happens.

Thanks again Lew. I did try bumping the bottle on the ground, but I was kinda of a wussy about...maybe not hard enough. I'll try to knock it loose again tomorrow.

How far is it to the filling station you use Fred?  You might take it back and see if they can get it flowing for you.

Well, maybe. We used to have a full service LP supplier that could and would take care of anything. But that place was bought out by Suburban Propane, and they couldn't care less about any kind of service...other than filling your big house tank. So I've been getting my small bottles filled at Tractor Supply, and I'm thinking they just aren't equipped to help with this; but it won't hurt to ask. My backup plan is to just exchange this for a working bottle, so if all fails Ill go that route. The few days are occupied with some medical stuff for Marie, I'm not sure when I'll get back to fiddling with it.

Fred, if you have a KOA nearby, check with them. I usually have my tanks filled at our local KOA. Competitive prices, and they know what they're doing. Doesn't hurt I guess the owner graduated from High School with my daughter probably but was going there long before when her dad was still living too. Just a thought. That said, our local Ace Hardware as well as our local farm store (think it's called Runners now??) also fill tanks and seem to be knowledgeable.

If the tank works on your grill, perhaps the regulator on the burner is bad or maybe the orifice has debris??

OK, I had a little time with the tank again today...after some really hard thumps on a concrete pad the valve loosened up and my tank has gas! I think rather than fight with this again, after i burn it MT I'll exchange this one for a different tank.
