Finishing outdoor cedar

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

Was going through the internet to look for oil-based paints to use on outdoor cedar but I cant seem to find anything I like...any recommendations about some good products would be highly appreciated

Thanks

It would be helpful if you can tells us a little more about what you like. Do you want to still see the beauty of the wood? Do you want to add color? etc., etc.

CedR does not take paint well. Sealers yes but the nature of cedar not good for paint. Maybe someone has had experience with it outside mine is all inside.

My only experience was back when we could buy exterior oil paint base #4 or #5 and use it untinted. this was the often mentioned trick of making it an outdoor finish. Anyway, I used the Olympic #5 without tint on some bird feeders made from cedar, some years ago obviously. But they (the finish and the wood) held up as advertised for at least 5 years, then we moved and left them behind. But they looked quite good when we sold that house. I sure miss being able to buy that product (the Olympic). Vincent, the untinted paint base looked very much like an oil based varnish, but had the formula and additives needed to hold up outdoors.

I've used One-Time finish on cedar picket fences and it's held up well.  The wood will age some from UV exposure, but it does protect the wood.  It's a bit on the expensive side, but there are 100% solids, no thinners and UV (sunlight) cured.  It comes tinted or untinted.  I got mine (maybe ship to store free) at my local Do-It-Best hardware store
