The Horror....

Featured Replies

So a lady contacted me, sent me this pic of a sideboard, she says it was made in South Africa, likely mahogany (i agree from the pic), and wants to shorten the legs and make them straighter.........

um......

that's a really nice piece, those legs likely have tenons inside the frame, so they don't just unscrew, but would need to be cut off, and that alone would ruin the piece, and there would be no good way to attach new legs of any design.

looks like we'll have an interesting discussion next week when i can see it in person.

how about we sell it, use the money to buy lumber, and we'll make something you do like from scratch.

Well, I agree, those legs are beeeautiful! I'd keep em as is, but, if you wanted to take this project on, they may be simply screwed on from the bottom. But, man, I'd hate to remove those and replace with straight legs. Welp Dab, cuz you a one man shop working for ya self, you can just say no. Plus, I suck at matching stains and or patina, I could never get the new legs color to match perfectly.

I have to agree Dab. Altering that would be a sin. What a beautiful piece !

Blasphemy for even thinking of altering that piece! Good luck!

stay tuned, we have a plan.  it's her piece, she got it for free, and it's too high for her pleasure.  likely work on it next week.

There are so many different colors of wood on the cabinet I wouldn't worry about matching the (which?) color.

I have to agree though that the detail continuity of the cabinet is great and would be spoiled by changing out the legs. The overhang of the top is reflected by the bulging sides of the legs.

If she insists on new legs then save them with the advice that if she ever wants to sell it those original legs should be put back on.
