So I was milling up some 100 yr old NC barn wood. One of them though still has tacky sap. Any suggestions to work or dry it up for working? Thanks 

I turned some really old timber once. It still smelled strongly of pine but didn't affect the pens I was making.

This is tacky which kinda surprised me being as old as it is. Plus been in my garage for over a year. Should I assume I could not seal it because of that?  Thank you

many years ago i built a deck, 1x5s for the decking.  despite being kiln dried, one still oozed a copious amount of sap once laid down.  6 or so years later, the puddle of sap is still there.

 

set the board aside for another project, or cut around that area.  no amount of mineral spirits will get rid of it all.

i'm not much for telling people what to do, but if i've experienced something that could help you, then i'll share with you.

 

thankfully, the affected area is not a traffic area, so not a big deal.  and with the greenhouse on the area, not worth the effort of replacing it.  scrape it, little dirt, no more tacky goo for your shoe.

One thing I will never turn down is someone else experience! Good or bad. I appreciate any working wisdom you or anyone else has that is for sure. 

we are so used to nice dry lumber, that when we run into one that is still oozing pitch, it sets up back.  "hey, i didn't order this!"  natural product, results may vary, always buy more than you will need.

 

i've had 2x4s do the same thing.  ewwww, sticky.  makes a mess of the TS table.

 

was cutting up a downed pine tree this morning (fell over in february), cutting off limbs to haul elsewhere.  after 45 min, i took a break, and my pants were full of pitch.  lovely.

 

 

I saw a suggestion on line that hand sanitizer may work.  Alcohol will clean the resin, and hand san'r is thick enough not to run off right away.

That would be pitch pine.  It is durable and bug resistant.  Not sure about finishes but it makes a good fire starter because of the pitch.  Sometimes called Fatwood.

Thanks! But TN to AZ is a looong drive. We had a family reunion at a resort near Sevierville. A two day trek for us.
