Danl Posted February 12, 2023 Report Posted February 12, 2023 I have a Genie electric garage door opener which works for 3 days, does not work for 3 days, and then repeats the cycle. The opener system is ~ 20 yrs. old and we have not had any issues until now. The floor eyes/sensors appear to be connected correctly. I looked at the feeder electrical box and found a wire nut which had two wires which had not been twisted and the nut was too large. I twisted the wires and used a smaller nut. The opener when worked again for ~ 3 days. All of this started a few weeks ago when we had the coldest day this season, approx. minus 5-deg. F. When the system is not working the switches on the wall are not lit. Do you have any suggestions? Danl Cal, Grandpadave52, lew and 1 other 2 2 Quote
Popular Post HandyDan Posted February 12, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted February 12, 2023 Some Genie openers had switches at the front and rear of the track. Slide the wires off the switches and plug them back on. They sometimes get corroded and lose connection. Wouldn't hurt to do that to any external wires you can see. Of course unplug the opener first. lew Posted February 12, 2023 Report Posted February 12, 2023 Sounds like a power supply problem because the lights are not lit. It’s possible there is a “cold” (no pun intended) solder joint or a crack in the circuit board Cal, HARO50 and Grandpadave52 3 Quote

Popular Post JimM Posted February 12, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted February 12, 2023 You might consider calling Genie. Surprisingly, I’ve had good luck with their customer service in the last couple of years. Knowledgeable, and they even spoke English. Shocking! lew, Cal, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 2 others 2 3 Quote
Popular Post John Morris Posted February 13, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted February 13, 2023 Also, if there is a power pack/battery in the opener, disconnect it, and unplug the opener from the wall or ceiling outlet, and let stand for 5 minutes, then reconnect the opener, and the battery pack. That's a hard reset for most openers. Grandpadave52, HARO50, lew and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post Danl Posted February 17, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 17, 2023 I saw a Youtube video which indicated that light bulbs may cause an interference and stop the door from working. The video also suggested that it may be a broken solder joint, as suggested by Lew. I went to my local "Battery Plus" store and asked for a light bulb made specifically for garage door openers. The Sales person suggested a Duracell Ultra LED bulb. He said that this was what the garage door repair people ask for. I'll give it a try. It has been working for 5 days now. But, the weather is also warmer. It was 28-deg F this morning in the garage. I hope I do not have to remove the circuit boards and look for cracks. Thanks again for you help/support. Danl ps. I was surprised that the bulb had a 2 week return policy. If it did not solve the problem, I could return the bulb provided I had the original package. John Morris, Fred W.
