December 28, 20223 yr Popular Post Scrolling through you posted work, I'm humbled. You guys do some amazing relief carving and scrimshaw. Thanks for welcoming me to the group. I've really struggled with any relief carving attempts, so I hope to learn a lot from watching your work. Below is my last carving from a piece of driftwood we found in Galveston. I wish I had taken a before pic but only have the result.
December 28, 20223 yr Popular Post Welcome to the Patriot!! I envy folks who can create images from wood. Your work is amazing! Edited December 28, 20223 yr by lew
December 28, 20223 yr Popular Post You're certainly not out of the league Kevin, just a different division. Amazing vision to transform a piece of driftwood into this piece of wood art. I can't wait to see more of your projects especially in-process work. Happy you're here. You just opened up a whole new subdivision to the neighborhood. I'm barely a woodworker let alone a carver so guessing I'll learn far more from you than you from me. Thanks for sharing and being here.
December 28, 20223 yr Popular Post Looks great Kevin. Welcome to the forums, Friendly. No critics. Great group of woodworkers.
December 29, 20223 yr You are not out of your league Kevin, you are an artist, I love your work and it would look just fine in any gallery of fine art, and I am sure your work would receive praise. I like your humbleness If folks go to your home page, they can see some more of your work, it's on par with the wonderful carvings done anywhere. I love this one, why, and what was your inspiration? Your nativity is wonderful as well. Also, what is the height of the carving shown here?
December 29, 20223 yr Very nice kw. Is that 2 separate pieces? Looks almost like bookends, or mirrored pieces.

It was scorching hot this summer in Texas and I saw this clay sculpture of a girl sitting in a bucket of water to cool off. So I put her in a red oak basket. 🤪! 36” tall.

Kevin, what kind of tools do you use for your carving? And how do you finish them?

It all looked like the center portion when we pulled it off the beach. Sometimes with driftwood it’s hard to know if it will hold up to chisels. Luckily this one held together. I’ve had many fail.

John, for bigger pieces I bring it down to shape with a carving hatchet or grinder. Then I’ll use chisels and knives to do most work detail work. Then a rotary tool for fine detail if knives won’t do it. My daughter is very good at Instagram so I’ve asked her to help me develop a sped up video of the process.
