I keep talking about my Craftsman brand shallow spindle gouges.  I came across this video with a similar gouge being used.  Check out the amount of available cutting edge and the shearing cuts being achieved.  Close to a skew but easier to use.  Seeing it in action is much better than words.  I would like to know what he is using for a finish too.

That's an interesting grind on the shallow spindle gouge, almost like a negative rake on the "inside" of the tip

Interesting video. I would think he had a better surface of the gouge before using that skew as a scraper.,   Looks like the finish is some kind of lacquer but have never seen it applied that way.

Whatever the finish was he was using would cover a lot of imperfections.
