Having worked with a lot of hard maple (1450) and cut bubinga (1980) once.   I don't want to go any further.

Gabon Ebony but it was turning and as I remember splintered somewhat.

Worked with a lot of IPE.....

I made the flag case for my F-I-L burial flag from bloodwood. I'm glad it was a small project.

Mesquite works beautifully and doesn't behave like some of these harder woods listed. It SHOULD be towards the top of the list but apparently the folks that compiled this list don't think 'firewood' is worth rating.

Just looked it up. Mesquite comes in between 2400 to 2600 on the Janka scale.

 

Really nice wood for looks and durability.

SSSHHHHH! It's our secret. B)

I have a stash of Purpleheart and used it over the years.  Tough on tools.  Lots of sharpening when turning it.
