Charcuterie Boards

I have a friend who runs a cafe downtown (Root 66), and he's been hired to cater a wedding next month, and wanted some Charcuterie Boards to serve some of the munchies.  Last week, I couldn't spell "Charcuterie", and now I learn that it's a fancy word for wood with food on it.

He wants 3, about 12x24, with 1-1/2" high borders all around.  the borders let you put more munchies on it without them falling off the edges, and also let you stack them when loaded, and also wrap them with cling wrap without compressing the food for transport.

Got them glued up and then unclamped to scrap off the excess glue.  will let cure a little longer before trimming to final size and planing, then add the borders.

Those are gonna be beautiful!

Mimi and I were invited to a get together a while back. They had one of these boards setup. It was made from a slab of maple. The piece was the outermost slice off the tree. Bark on one side and wood on the other. The bark side had some knuckles where the branches were remove and they became the feet. The wood side was finished with what looked like gloss poly. The whole thing was about 4' long and probably 14" to 16" wide at the center. Really a conversation piece.

he runs a Vegan cafe, so my normal finish is out, as it contains beeswax, so i'll just use mineral oil (food safe per the bottle).

Well, they will be perfect for crudités

You know, that's something I would not even have thought of....beeswax not being vegan-acceptable (or however that should be phrased).

dry fit after some sanding. that's enough for today, more tomorrow.

i intentionally did not join the borders in the corners, so there would not be a hard to reach inside corner that would be hard to clean down the road. the long pieces are 1" from the corner, the short pieces are 2" from the corner.

A little sanding, and I’ll let the mineral oil soak in for a bit.

This might not sound right to you, but yes I do like it, but if you want to impress someone there why didn't you round over the edges more to make it look like the beautiful wood you used.

the ends of the borders are rounded over, and the bottom edges are eased a bit.  left the bottom corners as corners....just because i did.

Turned out great DAB. Hopefully they return one to you loaded with some of those little "cruds" to snack on.:P

they have a table at the local farmer's market on friday afternoons, just around the corner, so that's where i dropped them off and grabbed a few munchies for the weekend.

Maybe not for a friend's job, but Rubio Monocoat makes a plant-based, hardwax oil wood finish that is 0% VOC, durable, matte and keeps the natural look and feel of the wood. I got a sample; great stuff but I ran out of the $$$ hardener / quickener stuff. I still have some but want to investigate how to thin it a bit.

Speaking of vegan, running backstage security this weekend, I had the task of dawn tidying  of the musician's hospitality tent. Camping three days, eating what came to me, ho and sunburnt by day, damp chills at night. Not really hungry but neither did I have decent food for days.

I'm eyeing a foil-covered dish penned, "dairy-free" left on the table overnight. Finally opened it. PORK RIBS. HUGE PERFECT RIBS. And from scratch baked beans. Wow, 'dairy-free' is right.

bwhahaha....  the recipients sent me a note...they don't want to use them until the wedding they are catering next month, don't want to get them messed up in the interim.....so, they have entered the "too nice to use" category....sigh....

I hate it when that happens!

They turned out great Dab. The too nice to use thing is always a bummer. Hopefully they will get over that after the wedding.
