Christmas ornaments

Featured Replies

For many years, we have been making Christmas ornaments for the grandkids so that have a "starter set" when they are out on their own.  My wife and I alternate years and this is my year.   Looking for some ideas.  I don't do any turning, so anything involving that is out.  I've done snowflakes, snowmen, plaited hearts, and some other things in the past.

Well SWMBO came home and liked the snowman prototype the best.  I was looking at doing a 5 pointed star but unsure if I had a safe way to cut the parts

Thanks for the follow up and pic Keith.  That snowman looks simple enough that I can do this with the nephews - ages 5 & 6.

the only problem I had was there was some curvature in some of the craft sticks.  I needed to joint them to get a gap-free glue joint.  And, no, I didn't use my power jointer, I clamped a hand plane in a vise and skimmed off the edge.

pine hobbyboard (1/4").  hole in top for hanging, and little brown block for table setting.  I used dilute water based paint as the green dye; layup the stripes in long boards, then cut at angle.

Thanks for the ideas.   I did some candy canes a few years ago, cherry and maple.   I used a jig described in a router book to make links for chains and just elongated it.  Then I cut the "link" into two canes.
