April 15, 20224 yr Popular Post It does look like it, especially the piece on the rite. Red oak has very open pores and is recognized easily by the end grain. That's a really old design on the chair. Someone told me the design dates from the Civil War.

That's a really old design on the chair. Someone told me the design dates from the Civil War. There were 2 chairs of similar design..My buddy had used them for camping chairs for years...but had gotten some new ones and offered these to me or he was going to throw them away. I brought them home..we tried them in the yard for a cople weeks but didn't really care for them and I was tired of moving them. Thay sat too far back for us. I knew if I didn't use them I'd use the wood so that's what happened. They've been tore down for about a year and in my shop...fixing to maybe incorporate some of the wood in some euros. I'm guessing the chairs were north of 20 years old if not some older. Thanks for response. Edited April 15, 20224 yr by aaronc
April 15, 20224 yr Popular Post Cut a thin (1/16" to 1/8") as possible but try to be consistent in thickness, slice across grain from the end of one board. Hold it up to the light or try to blow through it. If no light passes through or air, then very likely white oak otherwise probably red. Although ash can have similar grain patterns don't think it is ash.
