What tool do they use

Featured Replies

What kind of saw/tool do they use to make these joints?

Grizzly Tools offers a router bit version HERE

Or one for a spindle shaper HERE

They offer other variations as well.

Thanks for the info. I am not interested in buying this tool, I thought it may involve a cutter like that. My interest was to see how they do it. It is used so often in furniture and other mass produced wood items. I guess it is a great way to use the best part of the wood and eliminate knots and bad places. Cost reduction and more use out of the wood.

It sure would make a strong joint.

I see it used quite often in "contractor grade" prefinished or paint grade baseboard, molding, trim etc. material. Sometimes in solid wood door stile, rails and jambs too.

Yes I was tempted to buy that bit but talked myself out of it. However it may be the answer to the proverbial "board Stretcher".

see those joints in door frames a lot.  a way to make long boards out of shorter pieces (cut offs).

The desk I'm sitting at, the top made from a butcherblock 2'x4' slab from Menards is made of short boards joined by that comb joint then all glued together.  I'm sure the factory where it was made came up with a good way to use up short cutoffs.

For visual effect here it is written up in my blog:  https://4dfurniture.blogspot.com/2016/05/simple-desk-design-tenon-array-joint.html

In use it suffers from clutter that tends to cover any horizontal surface in my house. Just enough clear space for my PC/Keyboard/Mouse to work effectively.
