Router for a Woodpecker PRP-4

Featured Replies

I have a Woodpeckers PRP-4 Router table and currently have a Bosch 1617EVS router but when I tried the Infinity Lock Miter Sr bit it showed me that it's a bit weak and I need a bit more HP for that bit. So I'm wondering if anyone has one of the following routers and what do you think of it?

Porter Cable 7518 3 1/4 HP, there is a few bad reviews for this one that I've found about the speed control.

SpinRite 3.25HP

Milwaukee 5625-20 3 1/2 HP, and more bad reviews about the speed control.

Thanks
JT

The  PC 7518 motor only, in my router table, has performed flawlessly for over 15 years. No experience with either of the other two. But, I have a buddy who uses a few hand held Milwaukees and, really likes them.

I have the 5625 in my table with the woodpecker lift, and it's probably 9-10 years old with nary a problem. The issue with listening to comments like mine (and maybe Gene's) may be that the manufacture of these units has changed since I (we) bought mine (ours). I know my 5625 was made in Mexico, and I think the current ones are Asian.

Looks like Porter Cable stopped making routers in 2020 so that one is not available any more. I think all the bad reviews were on newer PC 7518's, sounds like you have a good one.

Milwaukee 5625-20 (3.5HP) & Bora Portamate PM-P254 (3-1/4HP) seem to be mentioned on other forums when searching. But I think they are basing their experience on older versions of those two as both have bad reviews about the speed control.

I may pull the trigger on a BORA 3.25hp PM-6200 I like the idea of using ER collets as I have 4 sizes of ER collets for my Vertical Machining Center and Chucker Lathe (metal lathe).

Yeah, I think mine's Mexican, too. And, from what I read, PCs aren't what they used to be since B&D bought them.

I too have the older PC and have no issues. If mine goes out I am going to switch to a 3-4 hp liquid cooled spindle motor. My son uses one and it is super quiet and when attached to a VFD gives you total control over the rpm. They are comparable in price to a good router motor.

Heres an example of a good one made in Germany.

3KW 220V Water Cooled Spindle Motor ER20 CNC Router Milling Grinding 4 Bearing 882511492426 | eBay

Its $169

I have the Milwaukee 5625-20 with a JessEM lift.  Purchased in June 2013 and replaced in July 2013.  The speed control went out on the 1st unit but I have not had any issues with the 2nd unit.  Plenty of HP.  Make sure you order the 1/4" collet.

I did a google search on that and it's 220v 3 phase and no mention of country of manufacture so I assume it's made in china.

I found that one on a search and it said German but I’m not positive that is correct. There are plenty of them made in Japan. I too do not buy Chinese for any reason. Most of the larger spindle motors are 220 and also three phase which means they are powered via a VFD which converts from the 220 single phase to three phase and also gives you the rpm control. Very simple wiring to set one up. Cost wise the difference between buying a 3 hp standard router motor ( $ 3-400) and a liquid cooled spindle motor with VFD are pretty close.
