There used to be a guy on another forum, who when someone asked, "What finish should I use for ...?" his response was ALWAYS one or both of two finishes, regardless of the project, wood, or intended use.  Thankfully, after much conflict with real experts, he left.

 

Now, I see lots of posts from people (who again always use the same finish for everything), and their go-to finish seems to be one or two of Olie's Oil, Rubio Monocoat or Osmo Polyox.  

 

I've yet to try any of these but wonder if they are just fads.

I'm kinda guilty of that, myself. But, most of my stuff is turned and either used for decorations or food so choices are somewhat limited.

No problem if most of what you make is the same type of thing.

Yep.   I looked up the SDS (aka MSDS) for some insight on what it's made of.  Unfortunately, no help there.

We who look at such things as the MSDS really got the shaft with the conversion to SDS. Sometimes I've found the old MSDS for products, but you never know of they changed things or not.

I have several left over finishes on the shelf that probably need cleaning out . Like Lew Usually two or three get used for everything.

By the way "we don't need no stinking MSDS" would not know how to read it anyway.

well ole gal and i bought into the odies, and she has used it a few items, while is does on occassion make some of the grain pop, and look nice, not too impressed with it, i just finished a couple of sisso lazy susans and gavem some odies, probably gonna have to give'm another coat, but once this high dollar finish product is gone, think i 'll not go for it again, so she did pick up some briwax, oh boy see where this goes

The Rubio is great but super expensive. I only used it because I got it for free.  And I'm out of accelerant. What I have left will take a week to cure, I hear.

 

BLO is a standard for me. Cheap, easy to dilute. Spirit varnish as well, because I had plenty plus lots of pigments.

 

I've just gotten a large box full of stuff and will be experimenting. 

 

But the 2-finish guy may be like a line cook who bases everything on a 425˚ oven. That is his/her go-to temperature, it's understood, no need for anything else.
