Heating -- adding a register

Featured Replies

I have a heat duct that runs between the joists in my basement workshop.  It runs right over my "work triangle" and I'm wondering about the feasibility of adding a register there that I can open up when I'm working in the winter (or summer) time.  Problem is, it's an ~8" round pipe.  Is there a reasonable way for a person semi-skilled in metal work to pop one in there?

Cut in an 8" tee and use a round register.

There are things called "saddle tees" where you would just cut a hole, put the tee over it, then you register. The linked one is adhesive, though I might still be inclined to put in some pop-rivets. Just remember it will reduce the air to what ever room(s) that branch feeds.

I added two to my rec room, but gety just blow lesser volumn. I added one extra to the garage shop. It didn't add much volumn either..

Now I be a sparky, not a tin knocker, but don’t you need a return for good flow?

The saddle tee comes with a damper too.  Once and done.

Cold air returns carry air back to the furnace. One or two additional vents shouldn't need any modifications.
