February 10, 20224 yr Popular Post I was assembling some donated RTA furniture at the furniture bank this morning. I have done a lot of this and saw two things that were entirely new to me 1. A set of dining chairs to assemble. Each chair had one extra bolt of each size and one extra washer of each type. And it was on purpose because the spec sheet listed the number of them. Makes up for all the time I'd been one short of something. 2 A nightstand with a laminate surface. Well, that's not new, but it was made to look like crappy lumber from the home center with worm tracks and that had a crappy, blotchy finish. Why would you do that?!

All the rage now...that worn, vintage, I made this from pallet lumber but didn't want to buy tools, mess with dirty old pallets look. OTOH, guess that's why someone donated it. OTOH, guess that's why someone donated it. But it was smooth, not worn, being laminate. Yes, I've repaired a lot of Restoration Hardware furniture like that. Hated it. I predict in a few more years, I will be on CraigsList "on the curb." I had a job once where the owner had a dining table that was "made from a Scottish barn door." (not sure how the factory had enough of these of the same size to make a standard product line) I don't remember the base, but it could have been black pipe. She had complained that it was splintery. (Duh!) I offered to sand it a bit, but told her there was only so much I could do without exposing fresh wood and making it look different. So I proceeded. After a few minutes, I quit and wiped the top with a cloth. It came up black. And she eats on this*. And wait until a meatball lands on it or juice from a hamburg drips. Nope, can't get that out. * I am reminded of a piece I saw once that was "rustic" and the color had been gotten by putting it a pig sty and letting them urinate on it. Nom, nom, nom.

BTW, friend doesn't get out much.
