February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post I received this note from a company I ordered some wood from and I lost it until now, lost in the computer somewhere, and wanted to let you guys read it. They sure know how to make a guy feel like an important person and for the amount I spent with them this time was fantastic... I hope its readable. I just now checked the milage to one of their stores, 830 miles to Tucson making a round trip still cheaper than the freight. I don't have any record here at home of this purchase so I must have made the order when we were staying in South Fork, Colo those three months each summer that ended because of going back to Texas in to 110 degree weather for the next two months that year in 2010. Getting use to 8220 foot altitude for three months then the hot weather at home almost done me in that year. Dallas set a record that year of 42 days straight of 100 or over. This was the year I scroll sawed those 4 large scroll saw jewelry boxes and getting them ready to glue up but I already had cut all the pieces to be sawed on at home so all I had to do in Colo. was glue on the patterns and run the scroll saw and glue lots of pieces together. I think that was the first and only time they paid the freight and not needing anything I had to order something to get that free freight. Thats not like it when my wife says honey I just saved 3000.00 dollars on something I didn't need cause it was on sale and you always said honey just think of how much you actually spend when you think you are saving something! Or is that the same? For anyone wanting to spend the summer in Colo I can get you some literature of the friendiest RV park in the USA or tell you where you can get it. But hey 90 % is probably from texas
February 4, 20224 yr That's pretty cool letter & story Patch. Thanks I needed that in the midst of being snowbound.
February 4, 20224 yr They are a great bunch, down there. They ain't the cheapest place around. But, the quality and variety of their lumber products is unparalleled in these parts. For exotics, they are the only game in town. And, guys like us are their only business. They don't sell tubafors or refrigerators. I've never asked but, I'd guess that over 50% of their business is mail order. Thanks Jesse, for contributing to our local economy.
February 4, 20224 yr Author The was the first place that I knew they stocked real Baltic Birch plywood. And some guys on Wood on Line said well they could buy real BB and it was in 4 X 8 sheets. Wrong! This was around 20 years ago and maybe they have changed their mind by now but you sure got to watch what some might tell you about anything. My daughter was taken by a cabinet shop in Austin selling her plywood cut offs in 3/4" and on the edge was stamped made in Taiwan. The outside layer of wood is about 1/64" thick and very flakey... The lumber yard I deal with in Abilene stocks 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4" and only comes in the 5 x 5' sheets but right now they tell me its real hard to get and only have 3/4 and 1/8" in stock . So this makes me take the pickup. Oh and if you do have some of that thin crap do use a very sharp blade and dampen the entire surface a few minutes before sawing it or else small flakes of wood will go flying away.
