January 4, 20224 yr Popular Post After watching a couple of Stumpy Nubs' videos on the subject, I put in a request for a Wynn Environmental pleated filter for my '80s era bag dust collector to upgrade it. I added a shop-made Thien pre-separator recently but moved on to the machine itself. Got started on the install today. Because of sizes, I needed to make a "donut" for the transition between the collector and the new filter (Stumpy talks about these). This is needed because there is not an internal ring to put the bottom of the pleated filter on. I found the Wynn directions very lacking (five pictures of "try this for ideas" https://wynnenv.com/wp-content/uploads/35-Series-Instructions-Letterhead-4-26-19.pdf) but Stumpy's videos good. I don't think I'll be taking off the motor and mounting on the wall currently. When I got the top bag off I was shocked at the build-up of fines on the inside of the bottom bag, even though I empty it on occasion. The other things I noticed was the dust being emitted (and landing on the wall) and the amount of time it takes for the bags to deflate after turning the blower off. So I'm not getting nearly the CFM that I should be getting out of this machine. Here are some "Project in Progress" (PIP) photos. I got a Rockler circle/ellipse router jig given to me and first time using it. Whoever it came from never used it, all the parts still in bags. Dust on the wall The bags while running Inside the cyclone First pass at cutting the donut The filter I got and how it's supposed to fit (but with a donut, not shown)
January 4, 20224 yr Popular Post You will actually be able to feel the difference in air flow after the filter install. For it to reach max filtration tho', it will beed some small amount of cake build up on the filter walls. I've seen guys "seed' their filters by throwing some flour into it when new...I don't suggest you do that, just be patient.
January 4, 20224 yr Thanks Keith. I don't have a DC system (nor an actual shop for that matter) but I had watched the videos James aka StumpyNubs has posted most recently. Agreed, very good and thorough explanations with detail. Anxious to see/hear your progress and results. BTW did you paint your Jet DC or are you replacing with ?? (H-F?)? Thanks for starting the thread.

January 4, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Well, I got a little more dusty this afternoon. Got the donut done. The salvaged wood was 1" thick MDF with veneer surface. That stuff is DUSTY. Used the usual method of routing a channel all around partway thru, jig saw run down the middle, then use a flush cut bit with the bearing running on the routered part. Saves having the offcut go flying into the bit. Center is a ~10" hole to let the air up, per recommendation. And it fits snugly on the top of the DC, but needs to have some weatherstripping that I will pick up tomorrow. Then fasten down to the middle. And the bottom plastic bag is on, just fit with a bit of stretch. All the air will come out the filter. Also, the Thien separator that I built from some scrap salvaged waiting for a job particle board, dowels, 2x4s, and Lexan. A one pound coffee can with the ends cut off makes the perfect 4" adapter. Almost all the dust and chips ends up in the trash can, making emptying a whole lot easier. When I look over and see the chips continue to run around the Lexan, I know it's full. I built one to replace the cracked lid on my Rockler DustRight that is before the shop vacuum. I salvaged the connectors from it and used some waiting for a job 3/8" plywood. The only problem I had with it was plane shavings ended up getting caught at the end of the cutout. I eventually just increased the size of the opening near the end and all is well. January 5, 20224 yr Popular Post Nice! I made this for my trashcan separator. Only need to dump the plastic bag about once a year.
January 5, 20224 yr Popular Post This is a separator I built many years ago . The center has a piece of ply dropped in for the baffle. It worked well but not near as well as the Onieda 5 inch Dust Deputy model. Hopefully in the next couple weeks that center stack will be altered with the duct going direct into the box and not have to pass thru the gate box. Had a gate box similar to this on the wall for Bandsaw and Drill press and that was eliminated with the same basic Idea I plan to apply to the separator . I think I have seen an improvement already in suction due to eliminating all the homemade gates and adding metal gates. I can also attest to the added capabilities due to a pleated filter.
January 5, 20224 yr Popular Post This is my set up. I have the 5" Dust Deputy too. The filter box has a glass window to see when they need cleaned. Keeping chip barrel empty goes a long way to keeping the filters cleaner longer. I used the same filters to make this air filter.
January 5, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Got out for some errands this morning and stopped by the BORG for some weather-seal. In retrospect, I should have gotten some different stuff, but I'll go with what I got unless it starts to cause problems. I put some in the groove on the donut and it didn't stick well. I then sealed with shellac and not much improvement, so I hot glued it in, a couple inches at a time. I had some left, so I went around the top rim of the cyclone. Then I had to figure out a way to attach the donut. Put screws thru the cyclone, added some wood blocks and screwed it down. Used the supplied connectors to attach the top and then the filter to the donut. Fired up and looks good. There was very little pressure on the plastic bag, so I guess there's good airflow thru the filter now. I took the old bags outside to dump the fines into the garbage can. Thankfully, there is a strong wind today or I'd still be coughing. Edited January 5, 20224 yr by kmealy
January 6, 20224 yr I'm sure you will recognize the difference with the new filter. Great improvement. Thanks for sharing. Danl
