I made a wood jig to build these bicycle wheel whirly gigs

I started building these whirly gigs ten year ago or longer. All are still running. But the flourescent paint lasted about a week or two and turned in to no color. Rustoleum rattle cans is not UV protected paint. The golf carts were Rustoleum paint but not flourescent and they faded badly. Must all be not UV ed. But as I was trying to find how to spell flourescent I can not find any of that type of paint in their line pf products..thats good for I was going to bad mouth it.

To keep running I use 50-50 auto wheel bearing grease and  5-40 synthetic motor oil mixed. Its stay in the bearing for a very long time.

I have no problem with balanceing the wheels for I cut all the metal flaps the same with a metal cut off saw and they all are very close to being perfectly balanced, Strange???

Daughter just brought 12 more bicycle wheels to play with.1074164267_windmill003bicyclewheelandamigweldercandotherest.JPG.3ad551a6333d36a2c410ddb35569f46c.JPG

Terri, Sherri brought me a bunch of wheels this last week to build more but they sure look like aluminum and I don't have a tank of air for aluminum weld. I haven't checked the inside of the wheels yet but almost sure they are not steel.

And right now I can't find 1/2" fancy molding for the spice rack. Lowes did carry it but neither store or Home Depot had any that narrow in Abilene Tuesday.

How much do you need?

I've got a few of those wheels from old yard sale bikes we bought for the granddaughters I plan to repurpose in some fashion like this Patch. Anyways on by a-round-2-it list. Maybe next spring/summer I can work more in the garage?

Grandpad...when you get ready to weld some metal flaps to the rims I can show you what this jig looks like. It lets me clamp each piece to the rim in the same angle all the way around the rim. I use a mig on these but I'm sure a tig would work just as good.

Terri, where did you find some. Hobby Lobby and Michaels use to stock it but something happened to their supplier and none now.

Thanks. I'll take you up on that offer Patch. Don't have MIG or TIG...hoping my little flux core will do it?? More spatter, but I can deal with that. Worth a try.

Thanks Dan, I forgot about that type for I decided having to chip off the flux to see how my welding went just wasn't worth the effort. What are you going to do with the farm.  And just because you won it don't stop that tax collector!

Whew...that was close, but your farm is safe Dan. Yep Flux Core welder.

I just don't do enough welding to justify a MIG/TIG. I have a small stick welder too. I learned on stick and always had access to stick in the farm shops as well as Oxy/Acetylene. Learned to weld sheet metal pretty well using it with wire coat hangers as fill rod dipped in Flux. Far better than brazing.

I have a small Oxy/Mapp set now to braze, silver solder, "weld" aluminum. I can weld some light gage sheet with it too.

I guess grow some cows or something.  This city slicker doesn't know much about farming.  Oh wait!  I could sell it to someone for a housing development.

Terri you have seen this spice rack, there is trim on all the edge pieces. It measures 46 x 25"444167347_IMG_20220101_115955954spicerack.jpg.d277962a00dc5c7fc6b2d63aa6d04f5a.jpg

The shelves are 1/2" and the end boards are 3/4"

That would be 20 foot of 1/2" wide molding

10 foot of 3/4" wide molding

I could make yours 5 foot by 2 foot which would have more shelves so maybe I could make two shelves with a few small doors?

Here’s the space inside my pantry. The shelves with doors would be cute, but I can’t think of a need for them. Oh, maybe for hiding treats? Haha. Of course if there is a closed door someone wants to know what’s behind it.
