Not sure to post here or Hand Tools? I had recovered enough from my back surgery to catch this auction late April, 2021. Still wasn't able to do much physically at that point nor hadn't fully transitioned from using my walker versus the cane, but I could sit in my chair and bid so I did.:P

This auction had numerous woodworking tools. I thought I might catch a bargain or two based on the early slow bidding but close day most items turned to gold. One item I hoped might sell reasonable was a new, still in the original banded boxes was an old style Craftsman wood lathe (single tube style) with numerous accessories. In the end, I backed out around $125 mainly because I wasn't sure I could load it nor find a spot to store it.

Anyways, bought the following. Took these pictures from my tablet while the auction was live.

Pony 27091 Vise. They listed it as a Pony Clamp? I guess it does "clamp."Going price on the net at time of purchase $60-$70.

Paid $18.40 with Buyer Premium. Now I just have to build a bench to install it on.

Wen dual temperature heat gun, accessories and case. Didn't really need it as it's very similar to the H-F version I own. But this lot was combined with

the Northern Industrial Tool drill press mortising set. It may have been used once. It isn't their most current model.

I know, these things don't work well or at all, but I like a challenge. Since I had to PU the "Pony Clamp" anyway, might as well make the trip worthwhile.

Both items with Buyers Premium $19.55

Look a little better once home and in the sunlight. Mortising attachment has, 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", & 5/8" bits + chisels plus several quill collars.

Sunlight makes them look pretty decent. Besides, just being out in the sun felt good.  In fact, just being outside sun or not, felt good.

The following 3 items I had interest in and placed max bids early on, then increased max bids a couple times before each turned to platinum plated gold.

Once the router bits got within 5 minutes of close, a bidding war ensued. Quickly passed my max bid of $76. I quit watching once they hit $132.

Middle picture is a Grizzly 1'x30"x5" combo belt/disc sander. Looked good from the pictures except the plastic cover for the belt was cracked. It had

been at $25 for days; I figured I might get a decent buy on it. Almost identical to my H-F version. About 5 minutes before it was to close, I entered a

max bid of $39. Apparently that set off alarms all over the world b/c it jumped past $50 before stopping.

Not to be out done, I re-entered a max bid (and final) of $74. This time red alert was activated as bids soared to $100. Once inside 1 minute to

close, if a bid is entered, timer restarts at 1:30. I quit watching when it hit $157. Now as then, a new one from the Griz lists for $125.

Last, was the dowel rod assortment plus the "vintage" display stand. It had sit at $34 for days also. So, around 3 minutes to close, I submitted my

1st max bid of $51. I mean who would want all those old dusty hardware store dowels and display but a hoarder 'er conservator like me, right?

Well again, red alert was activated. Obviously I failed to recognize their core was solid gold. So just for grins, I bumped my maximum to $101.

It blew by that so quick it fogged my glasses. I quit watching at $137.

So...Live & learn...well live anyway.

BTW, it is a little embarrassing when one's wife & grand-daughter has to drive you to the PU site and your grand-daughter has to carry the items to

the car. I hadn't been released to drive yet either by my surgeon or SWMBO.

Cost nearly as much to feed the three of us including the ice cream place as the items. But it was a nice sunny day and it felt good to get

out where the trip didn't involve Physical Terrorists making me do things I didn't want to do. Thanks for watching.

Nice scores!

I had one of those mortise attachments for a long time. Worked ok if I kept the quill clamp ring really tight

Nice scores.  Hard to figure why the price goes overboard.  Maybe just the adrenaline from competition kicks in.  I've seen it many times.

Thanks Dan. Yeah hard to say. I think some folks want to win (whatever the game is) no matter what it costs. I was burned once when I felt someone was running the bid on me. Might have been because I apparently ran the bid on him on the previous lot of like tools. I'll  post that result one of these days.

Dave, those are some good finds. I think the people that pay the higher prices just don't bother to do their homework and check what it really sells for. My Dad told me years ago that auctions were like poker games, you go and sit down with every dollar you plan on losing, once you reach that limit you walk away. IMO online auctions are a little harder to win than an in-person because there are more bidders online.

Thanks Bob. Good analogy. I suspect you may be right on-line vs in person. The two companies I've primarily dealt with the past two years usually have bidding open for 3-4 weeks. Allows for lots of views which obviously is what they're after.

I can't gripe about my purchases through either. Like 'Ole Kenny used to say, "gotta know when to show them, know when to fold them, and know when to walk away"

Nice score Dave, especially on the Pony :)
