November 18, 20214 yr Popular Post Some asked for further details on the homemade kiln I acquired. This is made from a small dorm refrigerator. The freezer compartment and compressor are removed. There are three 1 inch holes drilled in top And bottom . As you can see in the first photo there is a computer fan and light bulb ( any size will work). The light bulb is wired thru the thermostat. The outlet is for the thermostat but you could probably do away with it by direct wiring thermostat. When I rebuilt the housing for thermostat I placed the switch in the back. This switch cuts everything off. Thermostat can be turned off via the buttons on it. On this one the owner used Fluorescent light grids as shelves to replace the glass. As to temps a friend told me he uses 90 as low and 100 as high. I did one bowl that way but developed a small crack so I lowered the temp to 85 & 95 and placed a tray of water on bottom shelf. November 18, 20214 yr That’s a nice set up. The little one I built started out with a 50 watt bulb but I had some cracking. Backed it down to 25 watts and the temp runs around 75 degrees. Also I run my computer fan on 5 volts. That reduces the RPMs to about half.
November 18, 20214 yr Thanks Gerald for the "tour". Interesting and seemingly much less complex than I imagined. I assume one similar could be used to dry boards for small box projects and the like? What is the function of CPVC vertical pipe in right rear of last picture? Wiring raceway???

That is the light fixture. Yes you can do small boards
