Keeping the boards in line reduces sanding time ending up with more board left to play with.

Plus the pipe clamps gets a lift in the air to help the vise grips work their wonders.

Ditto!

Hey Patch what kind of channel did you use to lengthen the reach? It even looks like it's plated the same as the pliers. Where did you get it?

Dave these Vise Grip brand clamps are the V18SP and they are the ones I built these deep drawer scroll saw jewelry boxes with. Each piece had to be glued on one piece at a time and they had to be pulled up tight in all areas for if I left too much glue in one area or a little gap was left I didn't pull together by the time I had finished gluing all the pieces on, that little bulge, would have turned in to a mountain by the time I had finished gluing all the pieces together. I probably use these vise grips clamps more than any other clamps I own. They also sell 22'' models but haven't had a need for them as of yet.228070817_original(1)firastscrollsawbox5bestclampstoglueupthesedeepdraweredjewelryboxesImadesometimeago..jpg.3117012c1878475c01c6fc689da2d562.jpg

Dan they can be bought either way. I grind the head off and replace it with a bolt like in the picture I posted. Originally they were bought mostly by welders. I used the long type without the swivel pad before they started selling them either way.

Gotcha. I thought you had taken standard reach with the movable foot and had extended them with a small thin gauge channel iron.

I've got several of the Harbor Freight 11" Clamping Pliers I buy these on specials for $3.99/each. I haven't yet but plan to modify some using channel or box tube to stretch length.

I have many of both.  I use the padded ones in the wood shop and the others in the weld shop.  Most of mine are the 11R (11").

Great idea! Thanks for sharing

KevTN  I think I told this long ago but the white material on the inside of the boards that go against the glued boards is from Walmart and its their cutting boards cut up to size. This works better than wax paper I use on lots of glue ups and the dried glue slides off the white stuff.

I use  10x24 nuts and bolts on the vise grip pads.

And if anyone is buying get the 18" with the swivel pads for the holes are already there for some home made long pads.

FWIW, Sometimes Dollar Tree has the cutting boards for a dollar...well used to be since I guess they've got to raise prices now. Thinner than the ones from Walmart but work well for lots of things.

Dave since you mentioned HF clamps like the Vise Grips, you might better check them out before you leave the store.

I did check their long clamps to make sure they don't release the pressure after you let the pressure off when you relax your gripe on them and most in the store at that time would not hold at max width

.... All the original Peterson's held pressure at nine inches wide with no problem.

Most of my Vise Grips are the original Peterson's with that name on them.  One or two of the later vise brand does not hold pressure at max width....

Most guys do not need to go up to 9 inches wide like I do but I don't build the large scroll saw jewelry boxes so right now I don't worry if they do or don't hold at 9 inch width!!!!

I'm sure this width is only being done with me  for no one else is dumb enough to spend all the extra time cutting all the pieces out of the jewelry boxes using a scroll saw but hey if a person is comphy with the very wide gaps the band saw create, then just keep that band saw going.

Dave you beat me to the dollar stores suggestion. Wife makes sure what ever she needs she first checks out the dollar store prices. Hey I keep a few of their ginger snaps in my pockets all the time. Too bad they don't sell Blue Bell. Wife doe a good job of keeping me supplied with about 5 different flavors all the time...

I always check each one of the Pittsburg brand. Typically I toss back 3 out of 4 of those. Regardless the do have a Lifetime  Warranty but Ive never had one fail. H-F has a new brand name too Breman. Those are pretty decent actually. Cost more though but made in Taiwan vs China.

I do buy and use these on the feet of both the small 6" and well as the 11".
