I have never quite understood why people want to sand off an old finish rather than stripping.  Problems can occur:

  • Lots of time and sandpaper
  • Uneven removal of finish
  • Not getting finish down in the wood surface, resulting in uneven staining
  • Sanding thru veneer essentially ruining the piece
  • Removing any patina

 

Yes, stripping can be messy but it does a better job and is over faster.
