bandsaw boxes

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good article or book on making these?  I got all three books from the library that hit "bandsaw" on a keyword search and nothing of any use.  I've watched a couple of YouTube videos that seemed to be about the same, with the exception of Scott Phillips.

Most seem to be made from laminations.   Is there any reason not to just wait to glue on the back lamination rather than gluing it on then ripping off half of it as the first or second operation?

Any geometric considerations?  Like, "Don't make the drawer shape like this?"

Any other tricks techniques to share?  Photos?

I will definitely recommend "Building Beautiful Boxes on your bandsaw" by Lois Keener Ventura. The book provides detailed instructions for building bandsaw boxes and includes several of her patterns. Just checked Amazon and noticed that the price has soared again. The Magazine price has soared to $70.00. I do have my copy, which has been loaned to a few member here on these forums in the past.I'd be willing to loan it to you if you promise to return it when you have finished. It's probably going out of publication again  Last time that happened, it was selling for over $100.00 a copy. If you're interested PM your address to me and I'll mail it to you.

I can't help for I use the scroll saw to make the same thing others call band saw boxes only the scroll saw boxes have tighter tolerances. I'm also wondering why you would need plans for they are simple boxes.

My avatar is one of the boxes that laminated boards, but if you find a chunk of wood, that will work as well.  Actually, a chunk is much prettier as it has no mismatched grain and no glue lines.  It is one design from the book that AlB suggested.

 ... Dang Steve, I need to get my eyes checked. All this time I thought it was some kind of sandwich.

I have the Ventura book, picked it because it looked comprehensive.  She has another one.  You can get the "beautifu" book on Amazing:  $30.  Amazing.  I also see used version for $23.  I've bought several used "how to" books on Amazon (including Tolpin's tablesaw), and the quality is excellent, so the price reduction is real value.

Got bandsaw box #2 almost done.  Needs a bit more finish.  Saw an article on FWW on this style.   Used my shaker box template for the oval shape

I like it Keith.  Thanks for the "how to" link.

Nice, refined box. Love the clean lines.

The only thing in the article that I wondered about was why was the lid spacer cut out of the middle.  Take it off the top and run the  rest thru the jointer.  It would help the grain flow just a bit better and one less bandsaw cut line to deal with.
