March 16, 20215 yr Popular Post I'm not really sure if this is the right place to put this thread but it doesn't seem to quite fit anywhere else. (Admins please move as needed) I've been working on this project for the last couple of months and started planning the build in the months before that. It's all finally come together and will be taking her to the range soon. This is a high quality product Made in the USA by Mr. Jim Kibler owner and proprietor of https://kiblerslongrifles.com/. I've attached many photos and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the project and constructive criticism is always welcome. .40
March 16, 20215 yr Popular Post I hate it! Why, you ask? Cuz it's in your gun safe and not mine! Now that that's over with, I do like this beast. You should have a lot of fun with this'un. Was wondering if there is a particular reason you blued the barrel vs. browning it. This makes me want to dig mine out and play for a while. Of I only had the time....

Hated the look of it....like a rusty tool. Sanded back to bare metal and used Oxpho Blue. .40
March 17, 20215 yr I moved this up to General Woodworker Forum, it's too nice to be in the "Free For All". And I do have many comments, and I will later as I am out the door to my work right now. But I'll leave ya with this for now, I have been planning on adding a gun forum, with the two main categories of Black Powder, and Cartridge. With sub categories for gun building. I am moving closer to doing this. Thanks .40 !
March 17, 20215 yr That’s a beauty. Really nice workmanship. What’s the expected accuracy of a barrel that length and caliber ? Paul
March 17, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Technically speaking it should be reasonably accurate out to 200 yards. With my err...umm MATURE eyesight, I'm going to keep it to 100 yards. The rifle shoots PRB (patched round ball) and is in .54 caliber. A .530 round ball (with .015 patch to seal the charge) is about 225 grains and with a 90gr charge of FFg black powder should produce muzzle velocity of around 1600-1700 fps out of the 42" barrel. I will need to shoot over a chronograph during load development to get more accurate data and make adjustments accordingly. I expect that MV will fall dramatically downrange given the poor ballistic coefficient of a spherical projectile. .40 Edited March 17, 20215 yr by forty_caliber
March 17, 20215 yr Kibler makes some of the best kits going IMO...I've looked at them in person but haven't taken the plunge yet...but plan to when my project list is shortened. I've seen many beautiful guns posted on other forums started from his kits. I've met him..he seems to be a very decent guy,...and one of the more talented gun makers of today. He has made some top-shelf rifles. You did a great job .40 and thanks for posting ! 18th century early American firearms and art is where it's at - Aaron
March 18, 20215 yr Love it. Now the question how long does it take after the first shot for smoke to clear enough to see the target? And how long to load? By the way I will stick to my Mosin Nagant.

And how long to load? By the way I will stick to my Mosin Nagant. They do make quite the cloud of smoke. It's all part of the charm and it's amazing how fast I can clear out the firing bay at the range! Rate of fire is about 1 shot in two minutes if loaded and fired in a safe civilian fashion. In a military loading sequence that could be cut down to less than a minute per shot. The military method using pre-made paper rolled charges are less safe because the pan is charged and the lock is at half-cock before the main charge is rammed home. This method then requires the operator to handle the muzzle end in a condition 2 sequence of events. The term "going off half-cocked" describes this pretty well. .40

March 22, 20215 yr badass .40! Nice grouping too, for those who don't shoot round ball, that's a tight grouping! Folks who shoot cartridge get hung up on dime size grouping, but why? With a grouping like .40 displayed you'll get yer buck, doe, bad guy if it came down to that, but never does these days. Still, hell of a grouping! Hey .40, we don't have the feedback nor the clientele that the American Longrifle Forum has, but we got heart, I'd like to start a rifle builders and shooters forum, hopefully we can collaborate and make something magical happen I have all kinds of ideas, a wiki on the different schools of builders, regions, history, etc. Been playing with my .50 Great Plains rifle and loving it, I am finally hitting my gongs 150 yds out.
