2nd and 3rd floor tours of Monticello

Very interesting tour of the usually unseen parts of the building, family members, and stories behind them.   Great architecture and be sure to look at the furniture and furnishings in the background.

Those tiny steep stairs going to the upper level reminded me of the stairs in the old Shillito Hall which went up to the servants quarters on the third floor.   I loved that highboy in the one room...

Interesting video. I live less then 20 minutes from Monticello and actually had some walnut from a tree that was cut down because someone said TJ stood at that place to look down at UVA and it was blocking the view. I suspect Jefferson rolled over in his grave when that decision was made. My FIL helped the neighbor many times and was friends with him so when the neighbor cut that and the tree next to it he had the walnut cut into boards for Dad. I have a few left in my basement. That was over 20 years ago.

\And I've been living here, for the most part, since 1961 and been in Monticello twice, both school trips. But then my parents born and raised in NYC and passed by the Empire State building daily and their 1st time inside was on a trip back years after we moved. Seems to be a family issue.

When my daughter and her family were planning a move back to Cincinnati after school and 10 years near Cleveland, we looked at a few houses for them.  One had a maid's quarters and a private stairway up to it.   Passed on that one.
