First run with HSS 1 1/4 inch roughing gouge...

Featured Replies

So far I can say that I'm entirely impressed with the Robert Sorby brand.  The tool is about as long as the EWT carbides maybe a bit shorter how ever it was well worth the money I spent for the tool itself.  I think I may be a new fan of HSS.  Just need to acquire a couple more of the essential starters.  But what I think I was impressed with is how much material that was hogged off in about 10 minutes or so.  I started the fir log with the EWT rougher then the gouge came in and today I went for it.  Its a bit rough trying to work out the exact angle to hold it at but I think I got the hang of it.  So far this seems to be a winner.  It did come to me pre sharpened I didn't have to sharpen it the first run but I probably will now that it's been used on medium wet wood but it still worked quite well.  Seems that the speed has to be up quite a bit higher as well for them to work properly.

I bought the Robert Sorby 1/2” bowl gouge with the finger nail going and haven’t used the carbide tools very much since. It made me a fan of HSS.
