this morning I wanted to sprinkle just a little de-icer on the drive so I opened the main garage door and threw some around. Went back in and closed the OH door. Just as it closed completely, BAM! the spring broke. Sure am glad it was a coiled spring instead of the those that stretch out along the length of the door as it opens. I had one of those break (probably 45 years ago) and it diid some damage in the garage, luckily no one was in there at the time.

So one of these mornings then.

My doors on the house garage still have those stretch springs.  There is a safety cable for them.  I installed them when I bought the house.  They have saved the day a couple of times.  The force can still cause damage to the mounts.  Door springs have always amazed me.  Whether they are the stretch springs or the torsion springs they are under tension when the door is closed which is usually 90% of the time.  The do break but rarely and they never loose their tension.

 

 

 

I remember that safety cable trick, something my spring didn't have when it let go. I did intend to retro fit them, but we moved before I got roundtoit. I'm pretty sure i fixed that one myself....too old for that now, I called the garage door company.

Have has few break in shops I worked in over the years. Always fun getting door open afterwards. Especially bad if only door in and out. AND customer is waiting.
