December 15, 20205 yr Popular Post I use pieces of inter tubes quite often it seems like small pieces instead of space balls for raised panel doors, cushions under the scroll saws and other machines to make them quiet and I have been using strips of intertubes forever for my chuck keys to be attached to the electric cords on the corded electric drills. Plus more but I should have made a list for my pee brain don't work like it use to. And I bet if a tire store has any old blown out tubes they would gladly give them to you for asking
December 15, 20205 yr They are a good resource to have around. Sadly few tires on passenger vehicles and light trucks use them anymore. BUT, hope remains they still are used in bicycles and can sometimes be found in small equipment repair places.
December 15, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Last time I stopped at a tire shop I got two truck intertubes and they told me lots of farmers use tubes on their trailers. Also when we had the go cart track I talked the dads in to putting tubes in the kids go carts tires so the tire sealer would last longer. And that would keep the carts running with less help from the dads for they wouldn't be getting flats as often..putting tire sealer inside the tubes probably did help with less flats but it also sold me more tubes!!!!!
December 15, 20205 yr Popular Post Many of the now classic cars still use tubes, my MG being one of them. There may be some success locating a club in your area, or a shop that works on older cars as a source of tubes. The tires and tubes rot out long before they wear out, and are no longer road safe, but would still be good for other uses. Brings back memories as a kid, fixing the tubes with those repair kits when a bicycle tire went flat.

December 15, 20205 yr Popular Post At one point in my life I was a cyclist, and Iv'e kept some of the tubes from my bike tires for use in the shop. They are quite handy for a lot of things. I've used them as clamps and they work well for that, wrapping them around the work pieces to apply pressure.
December 15, 20205 yr Popular Post I kept some tubes from forklifts over the years and still have some. It is amazing how many uses I have had for them.
December 15, 20205 yr Author Popular Post I also had an MG. The splines in the wheel were worn so bad that if you hit the brakes too hard the left front tire and wire wheel would come off and go way down the road and some of the pavement would end up with a long gouge in it. Memory can't decided if it was the right or left side.. The first time it happened coming in to the first intersection of this town , the light changed, I hit the brakes and there went the tire and wheel catty cornered across the intersection and hit a curb in front of a used car lot and come right back down right there. This happened right after the light turned color so no cars were moving through that intersection at that time. And in about a minute here come the guy pulling a floor jack and carrying my tire and a large hammer. He said no damage on my end but it looks like you could use a floor jack.....and you might make sure that knock off spinner is on real tight. Then later I realized the splines were rusted out and I got to where I carried a large hammer and had two jacks in the floor easy to reach for this was my routine for a few weeks till I got enough money ahead for the repairs...

Just a couple - it's a 10 footer, summer driver, not a show car. It's a '68, bought it in 1973, shows ~40K miles. Typical northeast body rot, re-done about 15 years ago, mechanicals untouched. Like my woodworking skill level, I'm in mechanical pre-school. It rarely gives me any trouble. Just the routine stuff each year. My grandson has dibs on it.

They aren't made out of concrete any more, but are commonly lined with 45 mil rubber roofing-type membrane; in other words, big, flat INNER TUBES!!! I keep any trimmings to use for just what Jess suggested.
