Am finished with the base, then will attach the top to the base  with 1" dowels in a few placesIMG_20201207_095232770.jpg.d7fb441e31bb974a5548245eb1ab3239.jpg

I used clear gloss on the base and will change to semi-gloss on the top.

I would like for the top to stay light colored but redwood has a mind of its own.

That looks MASSIVE Jess...

Looking good Jess.  Going to be beautiful.

What is the top going to be finished with ? Very impressive piece !

Paul if you have ever driven through the red woods then you know how it affects us woodworkers....

Back in the middle sixties we had a cab height camper shell and three kids and after I took out the big back glass and put a soft boot around the metal edges, that pickup turned in to a poor mans RV for about a month and we traveled about 6000 miles looking and not staying anywhere except for a few hours sleep then off we would go...

Of all the roads we traveled, the west coast from San Diego to the north side of Washington state was then and still is the most talked about road with the greatest memories.

All the towns on the west side of the redwoods use to have a free supply of stumps and all the rest of the redwood the loggers thought was waste so the folks in those little towns would take advantage of the freebies and hang around where the rivers emptied in to the ocean with their winch trucks.

Since then California has changed the way folks work and live so no telling what  the law says about all the ways of life back then.... I hope those guys living out there still have a free supply of redwood to make a living with but I bet California gets some of the action before the folks can use that waste wood...

Anyway I was star struck with the redwoods but we were finishing up seeing Mount Rushmore and I told my wife we have to go back to Crescent City!!! but why, thats a long ways for what???? I want some of the redwood........ to make a coffee table or something for the house...

Well that wood has stayed in my shops in the way all these years and I got to thinking with this virus thing and our ages so if I don't get that table finished and in the house soon, oh well?

For a finish, all I used on the base was a few coats of clear lacquer so that is what the top will get.

This slab has so many large weather cracks even epoxy would not have covered the flaws. I remember over the years the slab got used as a work top area as I have never had room for a real work table...

It only has about 20 heavy coats of paint and some areas are still acting like a sponge. But it does have lots of character and maw will be happy when she finally gets to pile things on it in the house.IMG_20201210_115757362.jpg.2ae5919bfd2c4dfe6511bb8facb9499e.jpgIMG_20201210_115708732.jpg.410b94f9ce48a73ef7fe4c571025384f.jpg

Gerald the best I can remember is we spent lots of time digging through this shops inventory. The big building he had was about the size of the 2 lots our house is on and I kept telling him it has to be special to take back to Texas. And you want a red wood base that will make all those other Texans jealous? You sure know how we think!!! I hope this guy is still in business and still getting all that free wood.....

Jess that is one great looking table:TwoThumbsUp:

Took you a few years to do something with it but it was definitely worth the wait.  Fabulous addition to your home.

You made gorgeous use of that stump and slab, Jesse. I've done a couple using mesquite but, was never ambitious enough to use a stump. I just made legs. I'll bet that was a lot of work. Worth it, though. Beautiful table!
