November 30, 20205 yr Hello all. I'm making a very large photo album with leather straps as the hinges. The spine and covers are wood, finished with Waterlox. I will eventually insert what I learn are called Chicago screws (I describe them as threaded rivets) across each cover to the spine So, how to glue the leather straps to the Waterlox finish? I will try some stuff. I have googled this to find a lot of " this might work" or "you might try " comments. I like to learn from experiences of others . I'd really like to hear from people who actually have glued leather to Waterlox, or maybe to poly. What products worked? What products didn't? Thanks
November 30, 20205 yr About the only thing I've had luck with gluing leather to anything with is 3M Automotive Trim Adhesive.
November 30, 20205 yr Author Thanks for this. I've googled it and still can't quite determine if there is any work time after applying it. Or, is it more like a contact cement that when pieces touch, they are stuck forever without any movement? Thanks
November 30, 20205 yr Bob, You can use it both ways. If you need to move the parts a bit don't let it dry, or it won't budge just like using contact cement.

You put it on one side then press the other side into it. Then peel back and strings of semi dry glue come with it. Count to 15 and push in place. And it stays, it is quick. Little bit of give but not much. The spray adhesive acts more like contact cement if you let both sides dry some. ZERO give generally. At least as I use it in automotive. Sometimes the squeeze type is referred to as Gorilla Snot.
December 1, 20205 yr Author Thanks to all. Especially, the www.thistothat.com will move to the top of my woodworking URL list.
January 15, 20215 yr Author I went to www.thistothat.com as was suggested by Lew. What a goldmine of information. Lew and thistothat. I ended up using Barge All Purpose cement. In my own way, I had to go research the chemistry of how it is possible that two surfaces, covered with contact cement and left to dry to the touch, then come together to form a permanent bond. It is counter-intuitive, but now I understand. I would really like something with some work time as I had just one shot at getting my leather hinges aligned. Luckily, it worked. So, Barge it is. It worked great. I now have a solution to a five year old project where I was unsuccessful in gluing wood to glass. Thanks for the help.
