Putzing around with boxes

I've been putzing around with wood scraps until things improve enough for me to get to my hardwood dealer. Some of things I've been making include some tissue box covers. The primary reason I'm making them is to add weight to the boxes and keep them from lifting up when you pull a tissue out. But with this one I did something else. What I had was a piece of cherry that was not suitable for much else due to the multiple pitch pockets and cavities. So I decided to make a small tissue box but with continuous grain around all 4 corners. The technique is familiar to most, or all, of you I'm sure. But you take a board and resaw it in 1/2. Then hold the halves together as they would have been prior to resawing (cut surfaces facing each other) and pick up one side and move it to the other side. Now you have the unsawn surfaces on the inside. So, if you cut 4 sides out of the board for a box, you'll have 2 corners with continuous grain pattern, and 2 corners with book matched grain...which still looks continuous. This works best with motered crners, but 'm also still playing with my box joint techniques...so I made a box joint box. Even so you can se the grain pattern worked out fairly well. My big fear was getting the sides out of order so the grain wouldn't match up, but I managed to keep them in the proper sequence. This was the first time I had tried this and i was happy with how it worked out.

Nice!! What blades are you using for cutting you box joints?

Gorgeous! I really like that you kept all of the knots and natural imperfections.

Just my Freud dado set. It's an sd508 I think.

Fred that is a super job on the matching and finger joints.  Great job.

That's a cool set, and I've long wanted one. I'm jealous. My thought process in the past has been that I don't do enough box joints to really buy the set, but who know what will happen in the future. I may only have enough wood for small boxes if I can't get to the lumber store sometime soon.

Will more with a set that produces quality results. The craftsman is just dull and had enough.

Wish I had known you wanted one I got one at estate sale for much less. I will probably never use it.

Thanks was something that came up recently and I decided fix it.   Now if you find a sack full of $100 bills I can always use them....  :)

Sent you a PM Gerald

Nice effect with the grain Fred. The result is beautiful.

Nicely done Fred. The continuous grain really works well.

If I understood you right, this is your grain matching technique?

Arrived today and installed this evening.  Tested of course and was pleased with results.  Have to work on the jig.  Thinking I would like a adapter plate for regular jig that I just slap on the front quick when needed.  Have to work on the engineering portion of that idea tomorrow.

That is exactly what I did and thanks for the illustration. It's much easier to do than explain. I had searched a little for such a drawing and came up with bumpkus.
