New Project...... NEW BENCH for my HF wood lathe

Featured Replies

So this at the end of the morning I went out to my shed looked at my lathe bench.  I decided that it was time for it TO GO.  I ran over to the Home Depot Next door and picked up some 2x4x8 footers had them all cut to length.  Which worked out into my bennifit.  I held the shorter pieces up to my side and they are indeed a good length for my height of course once the 2x4s are drilled into place for the bed rest.  So that is the plan this afternoon.  At least I wont have to lift the lathe very far in order to move it once this is done.  So it's turning out to be a general wood working project for the afternoon.  But at least I'll be able to have a bit more space and I can get rid of that garbage bench I had put together in a rush.  Note the materials costed me less than 35 dollars all together including the screws.

Not fully done with it as of yet.  I haven't put on my other 5 foot boards and I've got 3 more legs to put in place  plus some supports  when I go to rip out the other bench will be needed to keep it sturdy until I can screw it into the wall studs to stablize it.  It could be worse and it could be much bettter.  How ever this one should be fairly functional.  And hopefully support the weight of the lathe.

More progress made... It looks like the way I've done this one up YES it will be secured to wall studs before I'm done with it so it wont tip over....  How ever I slid the lathe over to the new bench it seems to be at a fairly decent height... A bit on the higher side but its about the same height that the bench top lathe would have been so something I'm comfortable with.  It is also seeming to hold the weight of the lathe as well which is another bonus.  I've also drilled out all of the holes in for the lock down bolts so I can lock the lathe down to the bench the nice thing is I can also add the extension at the end as well for the HF swing arm portion of the banjo.  So I'm okay with this.  Hopefully it doesn't decide to collapse on me but so far so good.  I'll have to test it with the lathe running on it as well once I get it mounted to the wall studs.

I also decided that I'm not going to throw away the other bench.  I am how ever going to cut it down to a better size and mount it on the wall next to the door so I have a place for gluing up projects I'll also put my band saw on that side of the shed as well so things will look some what decent and I'll have a bit more room to play with in the long run.  I also want to get that crap that's been under that bench cleaned out and tossed in the trash as well so its a bit cleaner.  LOL Its a complete disaster.

It aint the best looking bench it's not over built I still have to secure to the studs on the walls.  The old bench is what I had the lathe on before hand.  Either way I can live with this.  At least it wont be a complete mess.

Even MORE progress made.... STILL A CRAP TON OF CLEAN UP TO DO.  My shed looked like a tornado went happy inside of it.  Either way.  Big progress.  Removed most of the old shotty bench put in a more stable bench for the lathe it is fully secured to the wall and shouldn't move at least I hope not.  Well see when I get a blank on it.  I cut out the bench that I had the band saw on that was flimsy as all heck.  So I just took that out entirely I'll put my mower there instead.  I moved half of the bench that the lathe was originally sitting on and re mounted it on the back wall facing the driveway placed the band saw on it and the air compressor underneath.  I'll be moving the drill press under that bench as well.  I'm planning on putting a surge protector on that side of the wall as well so I can run a power line to it.  (IE extension cord).  With the way I threw together the new lathe bench all wood shavings "SHOULD" just fall directly to the ground minus some of what would fall into and underneath the bed track but that would just require a simple blow out with the compressor and it should all go directly to the ground.  For something general purpose / wood turning base....  This has been quite fun to get done.  Not only the other added bonus  a HEAP ton more room to actually move around inside the shed.  As you can see I've got a lot of cleaning to get done before I can get back to any projects.  Plans in the works for a better drill press as well and maybe a new band saw.

For the most part rework of benches is done.  Floor is well as good as its going to get LOL.  Mower is in its new place next to my miter saw.  Band saw is in its new home drill press and air compressor are under the band saw.  I can live with this.  Just in dyer need of organization.  But for the time being I can start back up on projects at least.

Your getting more done than I. I've had a HF freight for two years and it still sits in the way.
