September 12, 20205 yr Well after seeing the work my 5 inch Ryobi Disc sander did on the outside of the bowl. I figured Id get something smaller and compact so I could get into the interior of my bowls. How ever this morning I ran over to Harbor freight rather than ordering it online just went in. SO much cheaper. I picked this little bugger up for about 30 bucks so not too bad of a deal at all. I've never really used any pneumatic tools except for way back in high school so I can't wait to try this out and see how well it does. Fortunately I already own an air compressor. Time to slap this thing together and try it out today on a myrtle bowl I've set aside. Does anyone else have this particular item and use it and what do they think of it?
September 12, 20205 yr Don't have any pneumatic tools. My air compressor is in the basement shop and is really noisy so I tend to look for electrical devices. I think you'll find the smaller size will be much easier to use, although the 90° head may make it a little difficult to get to the bottom of a bowl.
September 12, 20205 yr Author Yea that's why if I'm using my air compressor I use it at a certain time of day when I know all of my neighbors aren't sleeping LOL. I don't like irritating anyone one. I couldn't find an electric one in the store at the same price and what i wanted so I went with the pneumatic one.
September 12, 20205 yr Author At this point in time... As far as the pnuematic disc sander... I don't think I will be using it on a live spinning lathe. I just got done testing it out and it just does not want to stay stable. Even with the pressure added in. I think I will be continuing to stick with the 5 inch disc sander and hand sanding for now. How ever for trying the tool out. I can say it does need MORE than a 6 gallon tank of compressed air to run at long periods of time. Cons its EXTREMELY LOUD WEAR HEARING PROTECTION. So for the ears of my neighbors I don't think I will be using this tool for turning projects. Maybe something every great great once in a while. Glad I didn't spend a ton of money on this tool. Either way its nice to have it if needed. I think I will be looking for an electric alternative to this.
September 12, 20205 yr I just got one of these- but haven't had a chance to try it out- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/hand-power-tools/products/angle-drill
September 12, 20205 yr Author Yea I'm going to stick to Non powered for now since I've seem to have trouble with them I ordered a hand bowl sander should be here tuesday or wensday
September 12, 20205 yr Captain Eddie has a kit- magnetic bearing and bronze sleeve for a couple of bucks. All you do is add a handle
September 12, 20205 yr Author Yea I’ll have to look into that. I was watching some reviews on that and they where saying if something goes wrong with the bearing you are basically out of luck on the money side of things. I may look into that at some point though.
