September 9, 20205 yr So I've decided to give out Bhilwara a try. I got the blanks I ordered today I still have an outstanding Bloodwood blank in transit. How ever I wanted to see how well this wood would look. Seems like it will make a nice small bowl for a cheaper bit of wood. Either way this project should be fun and I will get video footage of this as well. But I can say it is a pretty tough wood to cut through. Even drilling on the pre drills for the face plate mounting screws was tough almost started a fire with the drilling. I plan on getting that going shortly.
September 9, 20205 yr Author Yea I'm like that with any tropical wood species. I'm not looking forward to sanding this thing LOL.
September 9, 20205 yr Author I'm hoping so.... I found that Oak is the toughest to turn for me so far. Even the Padauk was easy to turn, I've made knife scales with Bloodwood but never bowls so that will be a first too. My parents want me to make about 10 bowls for them to give as christmas gifts and they wanted 2 of the Bhilwaras so I will be carving two more out of this stuff.
September 9, 20205 yr Wait til you try dried live oak. Oh what fun. That is a very interesting wood you have there looks a bit like teak which is another very hard wood. Edited September 9, 20205 yr by Gerald
September 9, 20205 yr Author Live Oak... Don't think I'm ready for the live woods yet. Either way I started cutting into the Bhilwara and it is a nice wood to work with. Seems soft for some reason it was tough to drill into. How ever Its going to make a nice bowl I think at least.
September 9, 20205 yr Author Yea this wood cleans up EXTREMELY nicely. Just wish theyd get the actual color of it right on their website fortunately I let them know that when I called in for the order this morning LOL. But yea this is going to make a really nice bowl. I haven't even put a finish on it yet.
September 10, 20205 yr Author Not sure never worked with Teak yet.... Heres the video from the turning. I've got a Elm wood blank on the lathe at the moment.
