September 2, 20205 yr Popular Post Been having trouble with it, anyway...since I'm waiting around to start a new project, I thought I'd try again..... Was having trouble even with pine...tended to ball up...and stop cutting...unless I cranked the depth really deep.. What I found when I removed the iron...hmmm...checked the iron's back for flat.....it wasn't...flattened the back. Bevel was sharpened back to a single 25 degree bevel..for now...then.. First the white wheel, then the yellow wheel to polish the bevel ( hold the iron bevel up, with the iron pointing down...and withstood a blizzard of white strings ( white wheel wasn't "broken in, yet") Cleaned things up...then a the fiddling, fidgetting, fettling....make a depth adjustment, lateral would then be adjusted...back and forth, watching where the shavings were coming out at.. Lateral would go one way, cap iron the other...then the depth needed adjusted, again... Had an old wooden level...decided to plane the edges straight and square.. Nice when the shaving will shoot out and wrap around the wrist... Straight and square...first few tries, the plane wanted to do a bevel...got that fixed (lateral, again..) Need to check it for level, as the bench...isn't. then seal up the wood, maybe add some John Deere Green to the sides... As for the next project? This is about 30 years old....I think I can build a better one? Besides, this is about a 1/4 of the set I have....
