The picture first.

I started with a little thicker wood than 1" so I resawed about half of that in to, then using the scroll saw cut out the inside of the top half of what will be the rose. Then I scroll sawed lots of different shapes and sizes of petals then using hot glue build a rose and the little wall I created makes it easy to stack the petals in to a rose...In the clamps is whats left of the original piece of wood what will become the rose...

I didn't finish the first one yet cause I wanted to more or less copy making the rose for the second carving.. I am running the grain up and down on the pieces of the rose making it less likely to break pieces off later.. 

  The carving on the right side was all full pieces yesterday before I used the band saw to get a head start on carving them later. I think the thicker the wood to start with will produce lots of in and outs and hills and dales which I think makes carving interesting to the viewer....

  Lots of these will get two or three make overs until all parts will turn in to one picture.......Or this is what I try to get during the first time  until I lay that piece back in to position then realize the piece next to it still needs some work to look right......The main thing I have working for me a real wood carver don't have........If I screw up a piece I can trace around the bottom and scroll saw another one and start over on that piece...a real carver is more or less bound to the piece of wood he started with.....

  I have left the area around the rose tall enough so when the rose is back in its place it will look natural, hopefully!!!! Cheers
