August 24, 20205 yr I was at the local tool store this morning, and I was looking at the EWT #1 hollower, and comparing it to the EWT finisher. Other than the cutter size, the hollower cutter is much smaller than the finisher cutter, I didn't see that much difference. I understand the crook in the neck of the #2 and #3 hollowers, but is there any real advantage in using the #1 vs the finisher for hollow forms? If this has already been discussed, I would appreciate it if someone would point me in the right direction and save re-hashing the whole topic again. Thanks. (Re-hashing, again, I know: redundant.)
August 24, 20205 yr You are right about the size/diameter of the cutter. The hollower is less aggressive and is easier to control because of that feature, both inside and outside of a turning. I really like the #1 hollower for detail work as well. The smaller diameter cutter gets into tighter places. My other favorite tool is the rougher. Replacing the square cutter with the "r2" radiused cutter, it really does an excellent job at smoothing- especially at high turning speeds.
August 25, 20205 yr The larger cutter will give a smooth and flat surface. The small would leave many small lines. That is why the large cutter is called "Finisher" Hollowing I have difficulty explaining but the small cutters are much more aggressive with far less catches. In hollowing the large cutter takes a larger bite which may be ok outside but inside it causes catches.
