August 17, 20205 yr A couple of years ago I gave $2 for a box of wood at a garage sale. I've used most of it but there are some pieces of prefinished Oak trim left. It was stained a deep red on one side. I looked at it and the grain was different, much darker than any oak I've seen. I cut it up in small pieces to make it usable and glued three pieces together to turn on my lathe. I'm puzzled at the dark grain in this wood. If it is Oak, I've never seen this type before. Unfortunately, the rest of the Oak I have is normal Oak. Any ideas of the type Oak this is?
August 17, 20205 yr I have seen similar grain patterns in limb wood where the grain is curved as the limb bows. I used some a few years ago but found it to be very unstable. It tended to twist and bow on me. I think it is because the wood on the bottom of the limb gets compressed and tends to want to straighten when it is out of compression. At least that is my theory.
August 17, 20205 yr I was told one that there are 600 some species of oak https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak#:~:text=An oak is a tree,600 extant species of oaks.

August 19, 20205 yr Looks a bit like Chestnut oak also known as American chestnut. Wonder if it has spalted?
August 20, 20205 yr Doesn't look like oak. I want to say some kind of exotic. I've seen garbage wood ( imported made somewhere else) furniture wood with a grain like that only lighter in color ( almost completely blonde) but that might be old growth for that type of wood.
