June 19, 20206 yr Popular Post This one is 3" high and took a lot or layout work, angles, cutting and boring. Nearly gave up, when things didn't work out when boring. Did salvage it. Never seen one like it. Wife likes it, so it is oK Edited June 19, 20206 yr by Ron Altier
June 20, 20206 yr I agree with the Mrs. I just want to know how it was made. I am supposing that you turned the inside as usual, then after gluing correctly, that you sawed off the outside with the angles to match. Which angles did you use for the outside? Inquiring minds wish to know.
June 20, 20206 yr That was worth the effort, it is splendid. Like Steve, I would like the walk thru of how you made it.
June 20, 20206 yr Wow!!!! What a beautiful piece. Like everyone else, your construction methods would be welcome.
June 20, 20206 yr Author Popular Post I started with one solid block. Measured center and angles for the tapers. Drilled 3 holes on 2 sides to round the inside triangle points. I used my small band saw to cut out the inside triangles. Then. used my large bandsaw to cut the outside angles. After cutting one, I reattached the piece with 2 sided tape and cut the other. The small bandsaw gave me problems. On the top of the piece I could see and guide the cut, however the bottom of the cut seemed to go where it wanted. It took a lot of tegious sanding to get something that looked good. If I ever make another, I would not bore thru to the other side, I'd cut bore from each side. I'd also take pictures........pictures explain so much better than these garbled words
June 21, 20206 yr Yes, Ron, your explanation was perfect. While reading, I was wondering if you could use the band saw to cut out the inside like inside out turning. Then reverse the pieces and then cut and sand to achieve the same effect. I know it would take a very long time, but if you drew lines on the final glue up to make your angles, you could use a large sanding disks make it shape out the way you desire. Just random thoughts.
