Recognize This Profile

Featured Replies

I took a job building two raised panel doors and a drawer for a pair of cabinets.  I’m trying to match the door edges as closely as possible but this profile has me stumped.  Anyone recognize the profile and where to buy the bit?445C33E3-5957-450D-A432-8DD956278730.jpeg

Ron I can make that if I use the legacy mill and clamp the piece in the bed of the mill and use 2 different bottom cutting bits.

The shape sort of reminds me of an edge of a lid on the old up right pianos but they would be older than the Legacy Ornamental Mill I have in my shop and all I use on the mill is bottom cutting and side cutting bits without bearing guides.

Jesse, I figure it was cut with a shaper (mill) because it was mass produced.  I don’t hav3 to get it perfect but close.

Boy, this brings back memories.   When I first started getting interested in woodworking, cutters that fit in a table saw were the comme il faut.  Most magazine and book articles showed cutting profiles like this at various depths, widths, and angles.

How exact does it have to be? I think you can come (very) close with some of the multi radius bits available, but it may be more than a one pass cut. To be precise, I'd bet it will be a custom bit.

Ron,

That is an old style profile.

If you've got a shaper.

If you don't have a shaper check with Corob.

They have recreated a lot of the old style profiles in both shaper cutters and molding knives for the table saw.

The client has given approval to use an edge router bit that is close enough.

I have this set.  I’ll have to look at the bits.  It’s a scary setup though.

This Sears table saw set I also have a few different styles but I never used them in the 60 years or so since I bought them. I have seen many for sale at garage sales and auctions but I don't think any one ever told me they used them after they bought them and the answer was always it scared me to death just thinking about it....I thought I needed to try them a few times but no.....never had the courage....

I figured there would be lots of tear out and I never could afford to buy more wood to try..

Got a lot of use out of mine! You do have to be careful, though.

John

BTW, for the Shopsmith owners, the ebay link above shows shaper cutters that will also fit on the 5/8" arbor.  You can use these on the Shopsmith but your feet rate will be much slower if you want a smoother cut.  Just saying.

I've got the old Delta 3 knife set. They are similar to using a jointer. Just take light passes.
