May 20, 20206 yr Popular Post When I started to make a carved jewelry box for a change of pace I right quick had three different styles going and am fixin to add a couple more... So I decided to make parts interchangeable so a change here and there would give a person completely different looks and styles... So this first picture shows all the different sections can un screw and no two pieces will be glued together. And then I see where I did glue pieces together and even doweled the glue joints for those will be carved and might be handled a little ruff at times... but these are sections and not considered a have to part of the build for another different sized section can be made and used to completely change the appearance of the box. The first four pieces of a box has very small screws counter sunk and they hold their shape good enough to let me keep adding pieces so now I can add anything with out having to start all over with lots of measurements.... When drawing up something like a handle that will be cut out with the scroll saw it is much easier and faster to draw one side then screw two thin pieces of wood together, attach the drawing and cut out both pieces at the same time...and wa la when both pieces are glued together you will have the exact cut on each side.. Starting out I decided on a box that is close to 10 x 7" not counting the lid. Not a clue how close to any boxes I know of for none is in my house to go by... These pressed wood appliques are cheap enough especially the way I use them to get ideas as to what might look good here and there...and use them to let Rapid Resizer change sizes to match the area needed...I can scan the appliques to Rapid Resizer off the printer so this saves lots of trips to a commercial printer in town.. Also when using screws it is very important to first use the right size bits for the pilot holes or things will start busting and that only makes a person want to quit and go in the house... Now the way I have built this box, I can now take any piece out, glue a pattern on and scroll saw the pieces out to be carved with the Dremel. And I have enough screws around to perimeter to glue everything back together after I do the finishing. Then after I glue all the pieces back together and after the glue sets up I can take out the screws so I can reuse them on another project. There for a while I was buying lots of screws... May 22, 20206 yr Author Now I need to find a way to do this faster and be more exact.... Now I can see why the real nice carved jewelry boxes I been finding are much moo-ala And I realized a couple of days ago if I miter the corners and do like I carve other thing I will have to use a pattern that is at least 1 1/2" wide so I will be cutting back past where the miter starts to have enough of a piece so maybe it won't brake being so thin...and if I choose to butt joint the sides I won't be able to use the scroll saw and cut the pieces to carve away from the rest of the body....except on just one side of each corner!!!! At least I find that maple stays together better than some woods when it gets at the thinnest areas of the miter...Don't know if I'm explaining it in cowboy language enough for anyone to understand!!!!!
