Need exterior oil paint....

Featured Replies

and can't find any around me. I like to use untinted paint for outdoor applications. This requires the tint base for the darkest colors in an oil exterior paint. It use to be easy to find this (I used a fair amount of Olympic from Lowes) but now the green issues have done away most oil based paints.....I'm pretty sure they are known to cause cancer in Kalifornia. I had posted a few weeks ago that I had bought some Sherwin Williams SWP Exterior Oil Ultra deep base and I tested it to see if it would dry clear; it did. But when I tested it I used a very light color wood. Turns out that if you out it on darker woods it actually looks very milky when it dries, quite translucent actually. So now I'm trying to find another brand and living in a rural area makes it a lot tougher. We do have Ben Moore dealers, and I can't find they offer an exterior oil. Past that we nada close by.:BangingHead: I may be forced to use an exterior acrylic :PullingHair:. Anyway, I'm so bored with the jobs I have to do I'm actually doing a finish test (something I swore I'd never do). I try colors and sheens out, but not durability...now I am. I coated some white oak with the SWP mentioned above, some SW All Surface Enamel, and I have some Target Coating EM2000 on hand so I put out a piece with it as well. It's billed as a "waterborne alkyd varnish" and labeled as interior/exterior; we'll see.

Now that sound like a hassel. I say like Henry Ford "you can have any color as long as it is" white.

I use Rust-Oleum for exterior applications.  Metal or wood seems to do well. They have only certain premixed colors but I usually like a blue, black, yellow or cream color.  Both borgs have in stock.

I like Behr.  I used Sears Weatherbeater once, more than enough.  :JawDrop:  I have used Valspar oil based exterior and I have not looked for paint in the past 10 years, so I don't know how the industry has changed.  I am sure the public preference is latex or some clean up with water because of lack of knowledge or laziness  If it doesn't move from the shelf, through sales, it is not made.  So, if you have access to a Home Depot that may be an option.  If not, you can buy a gallon via mail from Walmart.  I wish you the best.  I have used latex for painting the outside of the house for 30 years.  About to do another coat as soon as I get some mortar joints repaired.  That is going to be a long time summer project.  Not going to get a permit.  The city wants a permit do determine if my color choice is acceptable.  I am looking for some psychodelic colors to make the house stand out.
